Jim Taylor is the head of Opal, the national intelligence unit focused on tackling serious organised acquisitive crime. With 30 years of service in the police as a Detective, Jim has dedicated his career to investigating and disrupting the most serious criminal networks in the UK at local, regional, national and international levels.
His extensive experience includes serving as a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) for homicide and serious and organised crime, where he has led complex investigations into high-profile cases. Prior to his role he has also worked as a Director of Intelligence for Wiltshire Police, overseeing intelligence operations to dismantle organised crime groups.
Jim returned as Head of Opal in October 2024 having retired as a Detective Chief Superintendent, bringing his vast expertise in intelligence-led policing, covert operations, and strategic crime prevention. Under his leadership, Opal continues to play a pivotal role in coordinating national efforts to combat serious acquisitive crime, working closely with law enforcement agencies and partners across the UK. His commitment to disrupting organised crime ensures communities are safer and criminal enterprises face relentless disruption.
