The Hidden Challenge of Fog Security: Managing Dispersed Estates – Lessons From a Brazilian Bank

Matt Gilmartin, Managing Director, Smoke Screen

Security fog has proven to be one of the most effective anti-burglary tools available when deployed correctly. However, ensuring it is operational and ready at the critical moment requires a specialised approach to specification, installation, and maintenance—skills that are often niche. For geographically dispersed estates, real-time visibility into the health of security fog devices is invaluable, ensuring they are always ready to perform when needed.

Led by Matt Gilmartin, the UK’s principal expert on security fog with over 25 years of experience in the field, this round table discussion will explore how a Brazilian bank successfully deployed a monitoring platform to manage over 10,000 fog generators across a vast area, reducing attacks from 100 per month to zero. As a member of the technical committee that developed both the British Standard and European Norm for security fog, Matt will provide unique insights into the importance of monitoring and maintaining estate health. Attendees will gain practical knowledge and real-world examples of how robust maintenance strategies can transform security outcomes in retail.

A Behavioural Science Perspective on Customer Violence

Leonie Nicks, Principal Advisor, Behavioural Insights Team (BIT)

Customer violence towards retail staff is on the rise. Some would say it is getting out of control.

In this session, we will explore the drivers of customer violence and why it is increasing. Drawing from models of behaviour, solutions to address it will be shared. Retailers will also be shown how to collaborate so that best practice can be further evolved.
